Finally, we are over the hump of this semester and springing into summer. The last month of spring semester doesn’t have to be bogged down by finals and cramming. There are plenty of activities to freshen up your schedule around the community. A few FGCU events being held this month include a wing eating contest on the library lawn Monday April, 2nd at 11:30 am, “Cheers to Senior Year” where you can enjoy an evening of root beer floats and slider sampling at 6 pm on April 4th at the North Lake pavilion. If you are feeling French, there a few activities to immerse yourself including a French movie night April 5th at 5 pm in Siedler Hall 116, or you can enjoy a French dinner at the Cohen Center 214 at 6 pm on April 18th. For our lovers of BBQ there will be the “Smoke on the Water” barbecue competition and music festival on April 27th and 28th at the Fort Myers River Basin, general admission is free but for those who want to experience the VIP package it is $75. There is an abundance of activities across our community to help take the stress off in order to finish this semester strong. We live in beautiful southwest Florida, so take advantage of our white sand beaches and natural estuaries to better connect you to your environment. The Reef will be hosting a mix of our own event which you can find in our monthly newsletter and on all of our social networking sites!
Staying in Fort Myers for Spring Break doesn’t have to be the end of the world! There are plenty of beaches and state parks only a short distance away from the FGCU area!
If you are looking for the standard spring break party atmosphere, look no further then the Lani Kai on the Fort Myers Beach. They provide live music as well as games and activities daily! A short distance down the beach you’ll be able to sign up for parasailing, banana boat rentals, and dolphin tours!
For those who prefer to spend their break with nature, our favorite place to go is the Six Mile Cypress Slough Reserve. You can spend hours walking across a boardwalk while quietly observing nature in one of the area’s more unique habitats. We recommend grabbing some lunch on the way so you can enjoy it in one of the park’s picnic centers.
Lastly, if you’re a thrill seeker you must look no further than Skydive Southwest Florida in Punta Gorda. A short trip north and you’ll be able to cross something off any daredevil’s bucket list! Make sure you bring your student ID as they also offer a student discount!
It is that time of year again! With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, there are so many ideas for couples and even friends to celebrate the day of love. The Reef is here to give you some date ideas and tips to celebrate this holiday with your loved ones. Plans for this holiday do not have to break the bank! Simple and cheap can be thoughtful and appreciated as well!
Some popular date ideas includes a picnic down the street at Three Oaks Park, a painting class at Painting With a Twist in Gulf Coast Town Center , watching the sunrise at Fort Myers beach, or a short road trip to Sanibel! Date ideas can also be on the adventurous side. Maybe try something like a rope course at Headpinz, a scavenger hunt in downtown Fort Myers, or even a nice bike ride on a nature trail at 6 mile Cypress Slough Preserve.
The Reef also has some tips before you start planning your day! Proper planning is a great way to avoid the anxiety that comes with planning the “perfect date”. Stay away from the cliché dinner and movie date. There is so much out there to do. Don’t worry about everything going as planned. As long as everyone enjoys their self, things will be okay!
